Hanging on every word

Proverbs 2:1-11
My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, 2 turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding— 3 indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, 4 and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, 5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. 6 For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. 7 He holds success in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, 8 for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones. 9 Then you will understand what is right and just and fair—every good path. 10 For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. 11 Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you.
So there's a scene in this movie "Office Space" where the protagonist is talking to a waitress. He starts talking to her about how he likes her and he wants to hang out with her and then they could "go watch Kung-Fu." HE asks her if she likes it and in response her eyes become dilated and she gets a look and says "I LOVE KUNG-FU" in the most sincerely attracted way. The rest of the things he says, she does just because she is hanging on his every word.

Hanging on every word...

Have you ever stopped to think about that statement? It often relays imagery of two love birds so infatuated with each other that they are for all intents and purposes "twitterpated" as the owl from Bambi would say. In fact, they are so hung up on the words they don't pay attention to anything else, life is in a blur, waiting to hear more words from the person. Did you know that GOD wants us hung up on His every word? Now I have been a Christian for a long time, I have heard of people who will "Wait for God to speak" and will go out into the woods and commune with God and pray and fast; all the while, hoping God will speak audibly to them about purpose, or their problem, or anything they need encouragement on. As I read this scripture, I kind of think that maybe we need to be more willing to hang on his every word. But I don't mean just hanging on the specific word of that moment. Here's what I mean, if you read in verses 1 and 2, you will see the normal kind of Proverbs exhortation. Turn your heart and your ears to God. Basically listen up and listen often right? Well then you get to verses 3 and 4 and it gets deeper.
3 indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, 4 and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure,

He says don't just turn your ears, or look to me, but pursue me, look deeply into my ways, ask me for understanding, ask me for wisdom. CRY OUT... Then verse 4 says we need to hunt for it like the guys on Goldrush. Search for it heard, when we find it, refine the knowledge, work to understand every facet of it. When we have done that... THEN, only then will we understand and fear the Lord (as much as we can fathom Him) Then only then, do we have a full understanding of just how much He guides, directs, and protects our every step. We must begin to understand this principle of not studying, but MINING the scriptures and REFINING our knowledge.
