An Analyst's view of Luke pt. 4

Luke 1:39-46;56-66
39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, 40 where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!” ----Mary’s Song---- 46 And Mary said: 56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home. The Birth of John the Baptist 57 When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. 58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy. 59 On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, 60 but his mother spoke up and said, “No! He is to be called John.” 61 They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who has that name.” 62 Then they made signs to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. 63 He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s astonishment he wrote, “His name is John.” 64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak, praising God. 65 All the neighbors were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea people were talking about all these things. 66 Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, “What then is this child going to be?” For the Lord’s hand was with him.

Introduction

Today we continue our look at the book of Luke. I have really been enjoying this exposition and learning. As we glean what God wants to say to us from this scripture, I pray that your heart would be open and the that the Holy Spirit would show you things in this verse.

"Baby Knows..."

My son Jude is incredibly smart. "He's advanced" my wife and I halfway joke. In many ways, he really knows a lot. But there are some things that he still has a lot to learn. A lesson he has to learn is that mommy and daddy don't like it when he throws his toys and screams whilst frustrated. We teach him the negative consequences of this decision by sending him to his bed. He whines, cries, but obeys and heads to bed. After he calms down, we talk to him and straighten things out. Similar to my son Jude, John knew things. He didn't know what he knew in this portion of scripture, but he knew something very significant was going to happen because of his unborn cousin. we see that when Mary enters the room that Elizabeth and the unborn John leaped inside her womb and the Holy Spirit filled Elizabeth. As Christians, we carry the same kind of knowledge. Sometimes, we don't know what we know, but we know that Jesus is near. Are we perceptive enough to see it? Do we react in such a way as to spread the Holy Spirit as a reaction of seeing Jesus? When we encounter Jesus, we must respond by allowing the Holy Spirit to out-pour from us into others.

Praise First (err, well second)

So I mentioned just before the reactions we have to the Holy Spirit and others is paramount. However, the next idea that needs to be addressed is Praise. If you look at the scripture above, when Elizabeth sees Mary is pregnant, she praises. When Mary sees Elizabeth get filled with the spirit of the Lord she praises. When John is born and Zechariah is able to speak again he praises first thing. Well second after getting his tongue loosed. Praise should be done first.
